‘Minari’ | Anatomy of a Scene

“Hello, my name is Lee Isaac Chung. And I’m the scriptwriter for “Minari”. So this is a scene that takes place at the very beginning of the film when the family drives onto a property and finds this trailer there. The first person we see getting out of a vehicle is Steven Yeun, who plays Jacob. And I filmed that I wanted to evoke the feeling of a man getting off his horse. We see Monica come out of the station wagon, played by Han Yeri, and then the two children come out of the back of the station wagon. There’s Anne, played by Noel Kate Cho, and David, played by Alan Kim. So we start the scene with three different perspectives. That was the unique challenge of this scene: start with the father, start with the mother, and then see the children’s perspectives. And each of them has a completely different view of this new place. Jacob sees it as a place of opportunity. You know, he looks at the land. He is excited about this new place of promise. Monica sees something she hasn’t signed up for. She didn’t know she had to come here. She sees a house without stairs, a house in the middle of nowhere. And the kids just have fun. You see a house on wheels. In this way I tried to start the film with three different perspectives. And for me it’s a family. A family has different perspectives. And somehow they run together in a very funny way. When we were in the field, we were all pretty much focused on everyone getting closer to this new land. Jacob sees it for all of his magic and he’s very excited. Steven was so good at showing his perspective, how much he loves this place, how much he sees the potential in it, you know. When I was writing this scene, I just loved that Jacob bend down, dig his hands in the dirt, and say, look at the paint. And that was a moment that came to mind when I was writing this script. And I felt that joy for him. I also felt a deep compassion for him. With the instruction I gave Yeri when she plays Monica, most of the time I told her that there will be no dialogue for what she has to deliver. Everything she has to convey has to be done through her looks, her expression, her gestures. And I told her that everything she does has to be very subtle. “” Garden of Eden is great. ” “With the two children, I just told them to go out and have fun. We didn’t want them to feel staged, but always to have the feeling that they were captured as children. “
