If a # 1 fails in the first round, we’ll know tonight.

All four women’s # 1 seeded teams – Stanford, Connecticut, North Carolina State, and South Carolina – will play today. Usually seeds are evenly distributed over the first two days of the tournament, but if a # 16 seed causes the greatest surprise this year, it will happen on the first day.

The first No. 16 to win an NCAA Division I tournament game was the Harvard women’s basketball team, which defeated No. 1 Stanford 71-67 in the first round of the 1998 tournament after two cardinals suffered anterior cruciate ligament rupture Weeks before the game. This year the Cardinals share the same seed – but luckily, no such significant injuries.

The second number 16 to win an NCAA tournament game was a little younger and came on the men’s side. In 2018, the University of Maryland-Baltimore County’s retrievers caused a shock when they blown out the Virginia Cavaliers (74-54) with the best semen. The Cavaliers then won the 2019 championship. Yesterday, Virginia lost in the first round as No. 4 against No. 13 Ohio.

California Baptist won the Western Athletic Conference tournament and regular season championship, but was ineligible for the NCAA tournament during a probationary period as it moves to Division I.

Instead, Utah Valley, which lost to Grand Canyon in the WAC tournament but was the conference’s second seed, was given the chance to play in Texas. The program, founded in 1978, had never completed the tournament before this season.

“This is a slightly different NCAA tournament than normal, but from the moment we took this job we’ve talked about getting to that point and it’s just amazing to come here,” said Wolverines Head coach Dan Nielson told reporters this week. “I am very happy that our team can have this experience.”

California Baptist was the only team in the nation to survive the conference tournament unbeaten. The wolverines were 10-4. California Baptist is now 25-0 after beating San Francisco in the third round of the Women’s National Invitational Tournament on Friday.

The Big Ten, Big 12 and Pac-12 led the second round of the NCAA men’s tournament on Sunday with a total of 17 of 32 teams.

The Southeastern Conference has four teams left, while the Atlantic Coast Conference and the Big East each have a pair.

The Big Ten started with the highest number of teams, nine, and six of them have now progressed – including a pair of No. 1 seeds in Michigan and Illinois. The other attendees at the conference are Iowa, Wisconsin, Rutgers, and Maryland. Michigan State, Ohio State and Purdue are out.

With Texas # 3 losing to Abilene Christian # 14 on Saturday night, the Big 12 hit six out of seven possible teams: Baylor, Kansas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech and West Virginia.

All five Pac-12 schools in Colorado, Oregon, Oregon State, UCLA, and Southern California are still alive. Oregon advanced over Virginia Commonwealth when VCU was forced to withdraw from the tournament due to multiple positive coronavirus tests.

The round of 16 is distributed among the conferences as follows:

Six teams: Big Ten, Big 12

Five teams: Pac-12

Four teams: SEC

Two teams each: Big East, ACC

One team each: American Athletic, Conference USA, Mid-American, Missouri Valley, Southland, Summit, West Coast

The first two games of the women’s tournament, both scheduled to take place at 12 noon in Texas, consist of three teams living practically on the other side of the arch. No. 5 Iowa, No. 12 Central Michigan, and No. 7 Virginia Tech are all among the nation’s ten most productive 3-point shooting teams – together they make nearly 30 per game.

The most efficient is Iowa, which gets 40.4 percent of its low shots thanks to a young trio of snipers that include sophomores Gabbie Marshall and McKenna Warnock. Their leader – the fearless newcomer Caitlin Clark – has attempted 254 3-point shots this season, most of them in Division I. Accordingly, she is the top scorer with an average of 26.7 points per game.

Central Michigan, the Hawkeyes’ inaugural opponent, has a similar offensive strategy: let the shooters shoot. It’s the only team in the nation with two players averaging over 20 points per game, Micaela Kelly and Molly Davis.

Neither of these teams play a lot of defense, but who can blame them for focusing on their strengths?

The Hokies, who will face a more traditional offense in Marquette # 10, rely on senior Aisha Sheppard. She averaged 3.7 3s per game and in Virginia Tech’s biggest win of the season – an overtime win over the number 1 state of North Carolina – she made four on her way to 28 points. Sheppard is hoping for similar fireworks this afternoon as she battles to keep her college career alive against the battle-hardened marquette who played near UConn # 1 during the regular season.

In the men’s second No. 1 matchup of the day, Baylor takes on No. 9 Wisconsin. The Bears defeated Hartford (79-65) and Wisconsin North Carolina (85-62) to advance to the second round.

Baylor, number 1 for the first time, will present the Badgers with a defensive challenge. The bears are one of the best shooting teams in the league, making 41.4 percent of shots out of 3-point range. They are recovering well offensively, averaging 12.9 per game, making them difficult to stop.

In the Badgers’ first round, they relied heavily on their five seniors to score goals, as they have all season. Wisconsin will need that energy again to keep up with Baylor’s outstanding offense.

The Big Ten finished the first round 6-3, and Wisconsin’s chance to represent the conference in the round of 16 depends on ball movement and ability to slow Baylor’s offensive.

The state of Illinois is in the spotlight as the men’s second round begins, with Illinois and Loyola-Chicago playing in Sunday’s first game.

The Illinois defeated Drexel (78-49) and the Ramblers defeated Georgia Tech (71-60) to move forward. This will be a fight where one team can beat the other in its own game as both teams are strong defensively.

Loyola has the best defense in the league, keeping opponents averaging 55.7 points per game. This will be key to its success as Illinois has a huge presence in the color of the 7 foot tall Kofi Cockburn. In order for hikers to slow down the pace, they must limit its ability to bring simple baskets down.

The Illinois are great at moving the ball and getting it to their top two goal scorers, Cockburn and Ayo Dosunmu. They demonstrated their resilience during the Big Ten season. If they are able to pick up the pace and force Loyola to keep up, the round of 16 will be theirs.
