“My name is Tracy Margolies (@tmargolies) and I’m the chief retailer at Saks. I’ve been with Saks for almost six years. If you’re a buyer of a specific category, go to each and every appointment, decide how to spend your budget, and sort things by location in the store and online. I think a good buyer has that balance between financial literacy and gut. What are you looking forward to? What do you think is the best? What will our customers like? There’s a lot of psychology in retail, but you also have to take risks.
What I love about my job is that it always comes down to people and products. I can get up close and personal with pieces by Dior and Chanel and am always surrounded by true beauty. A McQueen show is theater. One of my biggest beauty secrets is that at Saks Spa we have a service called Martine de Richeville. It’s a lymphatic massage for your whole body, and you really see a difference in the puffing up when it’s done. I do that when I really want to treat myself to something. The other thing I do is see Amber at the Saks Givenchy boutique to redesign her. She knows exactly how I like to do my makeup, and I would go to her if I had a special dinner or something. I just like eyeliner on my upper eyelid and I love extra lashes. I never use false eyelashes on myself, but Amber makes them look so amazing. Sometimes she also outlines me, which I’ve tried myself and … it’s better if I leave it to her.
Now that I’ve been standing in front of my personal zoom camera all day, I’m very sensitive to the way my skin looks. I used to use primer over and over, now I use it all the time. The Givenchy Prisme Primer is more of a color corrector, and I also have the Gucci Sérum De Beauté Fluide Soyeux. This gives me more silk finish and I use it when I don’t feel like I need the extra coverage. Gucci makeup is great! The products are really strong, the ingredients are safe, and I love the packaging. The foundation I use the most is the La Mer Soft Fluid Foundation in 250 Sand, which I wasn’t sure about at first, but which really gives a nice shine. Instead of the outline, I put Guerlain Terracotta Sunkissed Bronzer all over 03 and use Sisley Paris Le Phyto Blush in Rosewood.
I get my brows plucked and tinted at Sabria’s Brows, which is phenomenal, and then I color them in Soft Brunette with a Laura Mercier pencil. It’s easy. I use a Tom Ford pencil eyeliner and sometimes I use this Givenchy liquid liner over it when I want it to last longer. I don’t always wear mascara, but I do wear lipstick every day. My mom always told me to never leave the house without lipstick and my friends always make fun of me because no matter where I am, I have lipstick on. I always aim for something darker than my natural lip color, like Chanel Rouge Coco in 438 Suzanne or red like Rouge Dior in 999 Velvet.
I love hearing brands talk about the science behind their new products as I keep buying appointments. Many of my recommendations come from these interactions. I always wash my face with the Sisley Radiance Foaming Cream, which makes me feel really clean. Sisley products just work in my opinion – I used the Black Rose Oil before which is amazing too. Every now and then, maybe once or twice a week, I peel with the Lancer Polish or the Augustinus Bader Peeling Toner, which I also really like. Exfoliating helps even out my skin tone. I’m in my late 40s and I always want to look shiny and not dry. Then I top up a couple of moisturizing products. The Clé de Peau serum gives me a nice shine, I like the way the La Mer Soft Cream feels and, depending on whether I want a little more, I can also use the Bader face oil. I use La Prairie Skin Caviar Eye Cream mornings and evenings – my mom always said the importance of eye cream, that’s why I’ve been using one for 25 years. And then I also use La Prairies SPF 50 sunscreen. It’s a lot of steps but I go through it very quickly.
As I’ve gotten older, I’ve really focused more on hair care. My hair is thin, highlighted and I always blow it out. But now that I’m mostly at home with my toddler, I’ve worn it more often. I love using the Sisley Purifying Mask before a shower, then I use the Volumizing Shampoo and Restructuring Conditioner. Philip Kingsley’s scalp products are really good too. I have a handful of scents that I’ve enjoyed – when I start the day with scents, I smile. The one I use the most is probably Ex Nihilo Fleur Narcotique, but when it’s very sunny I might wear something rosier like Maison Francis Kurkdjian À La Rose, and when it’s dark and rainy I go a little deeper, like Byredo Bal d’Afrique or stronger like Voulez-Vous Coucher Avec Moi from Kilian. “
